Microsoft's Interactive Online Streaming Dilemma

Microsoft’s partners seem to be having a hard time finding success in Media Center with interactive streaming plug-ins available through the ‘Explore’ (Online Spotlight) section of Media Center.   Several partners have seemingly dropped support for Media Center without notice over the past year and with the lack of a worldwide presence for the applications you have to wonder about the future of Media Center as a streaming platform.

MTV Networks pulled their applications for MTV, MTVU, VH1, and Comedy Central months ago with no reason as to why.  Just last month the Queensberry Fight Network launched a Media Center application, yet today it is nowhere to be found.  And finally with the downfall of Yahoo! and AOL web properties, Microsoft is having a hard time keeping third party content available within Media Center.

So my question is, with Microsoft clearly targeting streaming as the future (and present) of the digital home, is it hurting the Media Center platform and Microsoft’s long term goal for streaming dominance to have all these companies come and go with such limited success?

Chris,  they have all recently switched their online streaming content to Flash which could probably be worked out easily on the Media Center PC, but it won't work on the Extenders & I'm guessing that Microsoft requires the stuff that appears in the Spotlight to be playable on Extenders.  When the MTV Networks dropped off was about the same time they revamped all of their web properties & I believe they switched to Adobe Flash.

Microsoft is going to have a hard time attracting partners because the most popular streaming sites are all done in Flash today.   They are going to have to either introduce Flash support in Media Center or try and woo the content providers back to a Media Center friendly streaming solution.  I don't see either happening anytime soon.

With all of the TV Pack crap going on I think this is probably a bigger concern to Microsoft because you're right the future is online streaming & I don't see Microsoft's or Media Center's future in it right now.

I am sure this could be a big deal in the u.s. but for the rest of us, it's a non-event.  With the introduction of video localization, those of us outside the u.s. don't get the majority of streaming media americans get.  MCE internet tv, hulu, network streams don't work outside the u.s.

They should create an app for WMC for Zune Marketplace and the Xbox dashboard.

Lets not forget that Vongo will be gone as of September 30, 2008. Starz has also decided to leave VMC.
