Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

I've basically given up on SP1.

Flash card reader stops working (WPD driver cannot start).
    Extenders stop working.
    Schedueler crashes upon every boot.
Outlook datafiles get corrupted ever so often.

Once I uninstall SP1 all these problems go away.

Guess I'll just wait a year or two until SP2 arrives...

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

SP1 made my laptop feel like it was brand-spanking new again but i have yet to try it on my MCE/Extenter setup.

Question - when you couldn't get it to work, did you un-isntall the media center code from the 360 and tell it to re-download/re-connect?

I noticed while testing MCE on the laptop that they updated the startup logo, do you still see the old one trying to boot on the 360?

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

I did not think to uninstall the code from the XBOX360 and see if that made a difference.  As many of my extenders have memory cards only and not hard drives, I am pretty sure that it down loads the code each time the extender experience boots.  Does anyone know if that is correct?

I have unfortunately already remove SP1 RTM and funcitionaly has been restored to my extenders.

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

From my experience in the betas I always had to go into the dashboard and delete the media center code and re-install

I have tried uninstalling MCe from the 360, doesn't make a difference. It shows the new logo when loading.

If I connect to a XP computer it will replace the new software with the older XP software.

If I try to run vista again it will re-install the newer Vista software etc.

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

Anton - Are you getting the same error message and events you listed in your first post or have your symptoms changed?

Does the Media Center PC complete setup or is it still at the "Connecting to Extender" step? Does the Xbox still report "The xbox 360 was unable to prepare a connection...."

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

Hey Janelle, I just took a look in my logs and noticed that I do not get the same error message anymore. Though the symptoms are identical to before I no longer get the timer error.

    Instead I got this:

Nivå Datum och tid Källa Händelse-ID Aktivitetskategori
Fel 2008-02-19 09:13:44 RemoteAccess 20106 Ingen "Det går inte att lägga till gränssnittet {7365A884-394A-4528-BF98-812FEA181B52} med routerhanteraren för protokollet IPV6. Följande fel inträffade: Det går inte att slutföra funktionen.
    "

It basically says: "Cannot add interface {...} med routermanager for IPV6 protocol. Cannot finish process."

I also get a warning about having too many certificates which is really strange as I have never added a certificate manually and I only get that warning AFTER having installed SP1. (The warning says that my list of certificate is too long and could be truncated, I should remove those I don't need. Since I never added any certificates I haven't really bothered removing any, if needed I'll try to just get some of them off the list.)

    Here's what I did:

    Step 1: (PC)
    I removed the following certificates:
    Remote Desktop: host certificate.
    MCX: Xbox 360 certificate.
Personal: Windows Media Center Extender certificate.

    Step 2: (PC)
    Removed the MCX user account.
(Both from "user accounts in the control panel and from Media Center)

    Step 3: (360)
DIsconnected the 360 from the network.
Disconnected the MCE client in the 360 setup.
Removed the Media Center application from the dashboard in the 360 setup.
Shut down the 360 and reconnect it to the network.

    Step 4: (PC)
    Restart the computer.

    Step 5: (360)
    Start the 360.
For whatever reason signing in will take FOREVER now.
When signed in I confirm connectivity (Xbox live and media).

    Step 6: (PC/360)
Run the Extender setup on the 360.
Sign up the key, press continue on 360.
Note the key on the PC and then start running.
The MCE driver will install (correctly).
The PC will configure computer settings, seek and find an extender, configure the extender settings and specify media locations.
But it always fails the last step "Connect to the extender".
When the PC "arrives" at tha last step of the setup the 360 will immidiately spit out "Connection Failed".

    Step 7: (360)
Do ask the 360 asks and restart. Doesn't make a difference.
(However signing in to my 360 gamer tag is now instantaneous again.)

    Step 8: (360)
Try to stream media through the ordinary 360 interfaces and it works like a charm still.

I also have some photos and a video of the whole process, if you need it just let me know. It's about 5 megs of data all in all.

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

For what it's worth, I've had SP1 installed now for about a week and I've had no problem with the XBox 360 as an extender.

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

I have been using SP1 since its inception but I never tried it with VMC and my extender as I don't do betas on my Wife Approval Factor machine.

Well as it went final I installed it to my VMC box and it now will only play content on my extender after I reboot the PC.

The VMC GUI shows just fine on theExtender but when I try to play LiveTv or Recorded Tv it just hangs... ( the endless circle of doom )
    My VMC setup:
    (2) Xbox360s
    System 1 -
Dell XPS410 (2.6Ghz C2D, 2GB Ram,Nvidia 8600GT, Blu-ray internal, HD-DVD external (X360 drive), (2) Vboxx DTA150s (OTA HD), Adaptec Dual Tuner (fed a steady diet of DirecTV... sadly NOT in HD)

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

AntonNilsson - Can you please provide me the detailed message that you recieve on the Xbox 360? Connection Failed is the title of the error page. I need the secondary message.

Can you please provide me the exact error message you get about certificates? After you ran the setup process again did the Media Center Extender Certificate get re-created? Was the Xbox 360 certficate readded? These are required to established the connection.

Do you have a secondary PC that you can use to test if the Media Center PC will allow remote desktop connection to be established? The extender connects using a remote desktop type connection and I would be intrested to know if these connection types are working at all.

Re: Vista SP1 ruins 360 extender functionality?

rgreenpc - I believe your PC has a Intel 82566DC gigabit network card. We have received reports about issues with this network card. The version that was in use when the issue was reported was version 9.6.8. Please check your network card driver version.

The three users that reported the issue installed the driver dated 2/20/2007 at http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/detail_desc.aspx?strstate=live&productid=2775&dwnldid=12197&agr=y&lang=eng&prdmap=2775. and reported that if fixed their issues.

    1. Connection Failed
The Xbox 360 was unable to prepare a connection to the Windows Vista Media Center-based PC. Restart your Xbox 360 and try again.

    2. "Nivå Datum och tid Källa Händelse-ID Aktivitetskategori

Listan har därför trunkerats. Administratören på den här datorn bör kontrollera vilka certifikatutfärdare som är betrodda för klientautentisering och ta bort de som inte måste vara betrodda."

It says in English: "When the server asks the client for authentication a list of trusted certificates is sent to the client. The client uses this list to chose a trusted certificate. Currently the server has so many certificates that the list of trusted certificates has become too long. The list has therefore been truncated. The administrator of this computer should control which certificates are needed for client authorization and remove those that are not needed."

    3. I only have Vista Home Premium. It doesn't have Remote Desktop. Only remote help, but I have no idea how to use that.

As mentioned, I have documented the whole process with pictures and a video. If needed let me know at [anton . nilsson (at) kxmedia . se] and I'll send it to you.

Looks like the link to the drivers Jenelle provided now goes to the latest version (2/4/2008, version 12.4), not the 2/20/2007 driver Jenelle specified in the text of her message.

Anyone have a link to get the old drivers?
