is there a way or another software that will do conversion to mpg but from MC directly?
I tried DVR Toolbox and found it way to complex for what I wanted.

I use a program called MCEBuddy ... it's super easy and automatic. Just point to input and output folders and away you go. It even lets you save a name ID and password in case you have a folder that is protected on a network that you want to use. Good Luck!!

MCEBuddy is an automated service for Windows Media Center XP, Vista and now Vista 64 that converts the Media Center native video format (DVR-MS) to a user-configurable file format (WMV, DivX or H.264).

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

I had been having no problems with autodvrconvert.  I used it to convert dvrms to mpeg, then cut out the commercials manually with Womble Mpeg VCR.  Womble is quick and easy to use.  From there I dropped the file into Crunchie.  The end result was pretty good quality, still not small enough for me, but acceptable.  But now I need help.  My system crashed and I have rebuilt the processes.  I have installed autodvrconvert.  I get no error messages but only the conversion name gets created in the directory and the file never gets larger than 0.  What is it waiting for?  I also used to get a popup window from off of the tray which would let me know autodvrconvert was running.  Now nothing pops up.  I am trying  out MCEBuddy.  I did not like the DivX result and I am right now trying to convert into WMV.  I sure would like to see it cut out the commercials.  Anyone know why autodvrconvert is not working?  Ultimately I would like to get back to what was working for me before my crash. Thanks

I have been using VideoRedo to chop out all of the commercials and convert to MPG. Unfortunatley this makes a 4 to 6 Gb file for archiving. It is perfect for converting to DVD but not so perfect for Leaving on the hard drive. that is why i convert them to Divx afterwards and watch it through my windows media extender (lynksys DMA2200)
    VideoRedo converts.

I have used Gear Video to cut out commercials and output to different formats with a lot of success.

I was chatting the the folks over at GEAR Software and they offered a 40% discount coupon to all of the users at TGB - use g40discount at checkout to receive the 40% off. Seems they have a few MCE integration projects in the pipeline including integrating the stream editing capabilities of Gear Video directly into MCE.

I use the Video Redo TV Suite to convert my recorded TV shows.. havent had issues converting at all, and it has a built in "Ad-scanner" that does most of the legwork filtering out all those commercials!! (have to tweak it from time to time).

Okay I have tried Handbrake, Mediacoder and Gear Software and I am not impressed with the quality so far. I guess I still have allot of tweaking to do to get a descent output on my TV and PC. There has to be a software/codec/wrapper that will keep the video we record on the TV tuner Cards in DVR_MS and convert it straight over to something less than 1Gb with excellant quality.

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Okay I guess I was not specific enough. I use VideoRedo TV Suite to cut the commercials out of my TV shows and it converts it to mpg format. the mpg file is 2 to 3 Gb's big. Now if I want to store that one hour show (aka Chuck, Stargate Atlantis or Twittletwat, etc.) on my hard drive with out having to burn a DVD I want to crunch the mpg2 down to something I can rewatch at a later date on my TV via media extender. But i do not want to store 2-3 Gb files. I found TMPGEnc Express 4.0 really good at crunching. Unfortunatley i have no idea now how to use it to my full advantage. It can crunch and convert any file to any file. Now the hard part. how to crunch it and keep the excellant quality the mpg2 file was in the first place.

     Divx
     Xvid
     WMV
     MPG
     AVI
     264
     MP4

What are the correct settings for these formats?
    Which format is the best?
Which one will work on a linksys media extender better?
How far can a crunch go and keep excellant quality?

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Why bother with that program ? it hasn't even been supported for ages.

I started using VideoRedo Plus, but now use the new and improved VideoRedo TVSuite.

If you want a very powerful program, and the most widely used for anyone using Windows Media Center, this is the only one to get.  It was made for editing Media Center recordings.

and no, I don't work for them.

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Because mpg is still 2.4 Gb and above. If I want to crunch it and save it for my media library I would want it to be less than 1Gb for a file. TV Suite for cutting out the commercials and TMPGenc for crunching. Five minutes or less in cutting out the commercials and 35 minutes for the crunch. Now to get a better, faster, cheaper  NAS system.
