I'm running XP/MCE 2005 and lately (after upgrading to an Nvidia 9600GT) I've lost the overlay in MCE.  By that I mean the part that pops up when you change volume or type in a channel, get additional info etc.

All I have is the window with live TV or whatever in it.

I can still navigate since I know where things are, and they do respond when I mouseover them but I simply can't see them anymore.

I dual-boot this machine with Vista, and it works just fine there.  I tried roling back the video driver, and even putting the old 8500GT back in, still nothing.

Any suggestions on how to get the interface back in working order?

Appears to be a problem with my 9600GT card.  It blew out recently, and after putting my old 8600Gt back in, it's working again.

I also have this overlay problem, mine seems to happen when the overlay has not been brought up recently, I have minimize the MC Window, or Alt Tab'd to see another window.  I can navigate audibly but that doesn't last long cause by closing the window and restarting MC, the overlay comes back.  I run  XP MC 2005.  My Video Card is nvidia geforce 8800 GT.  This was also a problem on my Gateway XP MC 2002.  I don't have much knowledge to fix this but It's good to know it's not just one persons problem. 

I would love to see a solution to this,

I am also having this issue. It originally started a couple of months back when I built the pc and put a Geforce 8500GT in it. I never did figure it out and just swapped it out for a Radeon HD2600XT and all was good. Now I went and did it again, I found a deal on a 8800GT that was so good I couldnt resist. I just got done installing it, reformatting the pc, and installing the drivers again and still have the same overlay issue. Did anyone ever find out what was causing this? I have a vista machine as well and the same 8800GT card installed in it and no issues in vista, just XPMCE

I had the same problem until I enabled (direct x video acceleratoin) and (use high quality mode) under video acceleration in windows media player 11. Go to tools/options/performance/advanced to get to the settings.

ati mpeg video for tv set as default with Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility.

I had to change 2 more setting to get it to work reliably. i changed the decoder for tv and dvd to NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder. Then while the video was playing i clicked on the properties for the nvidia decoder in the notifacation on the task bar and disabled direct x video acceleratoin..

This solves it for me too but still isn't the answer to the problem. Does no one know the real cause yet ????

Did some testing.
Borrowed an ATI card and it worked perfectly, no broken menus,
Went back to my 8500GT, broken menu,
next I stuck my 8600GT in, again, no broken menu.

My 8500GT is a fanless ASUS card, is it stuffed ?
It has no problems doing everything except the one thing I want it to do.
