    Re: Setting up Webguide

So... No ideas or suggestions as to how to access my Webguide from another location?  How do I know what address to use to access my webguide at home from another place?

I'll see if I can post a screen capture of my setup in Linksys.

    Webguide and Cablecard

    Hi,

It's my understanding that the new webguide program allows for a "prism" view in MCE that aggregates recordings from multiple machines.  I know that cablecard recordings cannot be streamed to another machine.  However, can local cablecard recordings be played within the "prism" interface? I'd like to have a machine in the TV room with a cablecard tuner that can get the benefit of analog/QAM tuners in a networked machine. I don't want to have to switch between two interfaces, though.

    Thanks!

As long as Port 443 is available to forward to your MCE machine, any non HDCP video can be viewed over the web. The key is to be able to acees your MCE box, whether through prism or a stright port forward. For those of us that have Windows Home Server (and you may too?) it is not possible with Prism becasue port 443 is reserved for the WHS website feature.

    Good luck.

    Just an fyi.

All cable card recorded shows are HDCP video.  In other words if you use an OCUR device with a cable card inserted it will encrypt the shows.  The correct answer to this is no you can not use webguide to view data recorded with a cable card reciever, weather it is SD or HD content.

    Re: Webguide and Cablecard

    Hi

Just to be clear-I am not trying to view cablecard content that is on another machine, or through a web interface. I want to use the web guide aggregator that is within media center to view locally recorded cablecard content. Are you saying that this is also not possible?

I have no idea.  I never thought of using a program other than MCE to try viewing the content so I do not know if it will work.  The question to ask is, does Webguide support HDCP?  If it does it may be possible, if not then I would have to say no.

The only way to find this out for sure is to have someone who currently has a cablecard and webguide try it out.

My  guess is it wont work but thats just a guess.

    Re: Webguide and Cablecard

The question would actually be what would WebGuide do with WMDRM protected content, HDCP is just the output protection (physical).  The answer is, nothing.  WebGuide (along with any other program) should just error out when attempting to play back the content.

    Re: Webguide and Cablecard

Thanks for the response. I kind of guessed that was the answer. I thought maybe there was something in the Media Center architecture that allowed plugins to play back DRMed content through some sort of built-in handling of these things.

yes! Ive been through all that !! Here are the important steps:

    1. Assign your speific rig a static IP > this is done in network adapater properties
    2. Link your dynamic IP with a dynamic DNS service....  this makes your external IP address easier to acess externally as you link it to an easy to rememner set of words.  Some modems have this capability built in, otherwise you can used a free service like www.dyndns.com.... When this is done, rather than trying to remember a large group of numbers(that often change)... you just type in the words you linked... eg. http://<whatever>.homeip.net
    3. Setup webguide, create web and video ports... its setup tries to create port forwards automatically, but you may have to do it manually(I did)
    4. If port forwarding didnt work normally, you'll have to go into modem/router setup and do it manually. Best way is to follow the 'port forward help' link the program gives if you dont know how to do this. (in my belkin modem/router assigning ports is controlled under the 'virtual servers' section) its as simple as plugging in a couple of numbers   :)
    5. Dont forget to restart your router and machine after all the tinkering

so once all setup: all youd need to access webguide internally is to type in the static IP yo created in step 1.  To access outisde your home network, all you type in is http://<whatever>.homeip.net  !!

amazing app. and all of its functions are free now, since Doug Berret, was scooped up by MS for his talents.

please let me know if you need more detailed help - I know its a bugger of a thing if youre new to that type of tinkering(as I was)...

IYIYI Those two first steps are absolutely confusing to me.  I thought Static IP and Dynamic IP are total opposites of each other?  So I just open my Properties on my network card and highlight TCP/IP and select properties and instead of obtaining an IP address automatically I assign it one?

    And the same for DNS?

Do I just pull out numbers out of the air and put them in there?  I'm sorry, this is one area of my computer that's always been a bit of challenge for me, I've never really understood how network addresses were assigned. :P

    Re: Setting up Webguide

First, I was wondering what you were hoping to use webguide for. Its definitely excellent for remote guide scheduling... sharing video and music is OK, though live tv streaming does require you usually install powerdvd/ac3 codecs - so just a caveat about that....

    re- IPs etc

I could give you a ''quick n nasty'' guide, but I think its a good idea to be walked through it so you come out with a bit of an understanding about whats going on....that;s how I prefer it anyway.

here's the exact page I used when starting with the same puzzled questions! (the webguide program will actually point you there)

So, if you are keen to proceed

    1. read this page to assign static IP
    http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm

    2. download and install webguide onto your mce rig from www.asciiexpress.com >>
webguide may be successful in configuring your ports automatically... if it isnt - you will have to do it manually (you will be able to check from within webguide config in the 'network config' tab)  If you do it manually, the port numbers you pick are up to you, I pick 80 for web and 1080 for video. s'easy!

Heres the page where you can look up portforward instructions per your router model
    http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

**make sure you reboot after all the tinkering

doing these to alone should allow you internal access to to your mce rig, if youve done it all Ok !! ie from another computer on your network....(actually you can do it even on the same computer if you sont have another to test on)

All you do is type in
http://<staticip> and you'll get the webguide login page instantly!
<staticip> = what you assigned in step 1

do this, checkout the features, interface - it will look the same from any external pc but that requires you set it up for external/remote access...

if you do that and all of the above is working well...and you'd like to proceed with setting up external/remote access..... come back and we get on with the DNS bit ;)

All I can recommend...read those guides diligently, and be patient ! It seriously took me 4 days to get my head around this, with help from forum folk - and I was just as green about network stuff.. If I can do it - Im sure anyone can(I'm moreso into high end gaming/overlcocks/thermals - this stuff  was like learning a new language initially :p ....lolz )

    good luck

just as a heads up - if you are keen on giving streaming tv a try, you will need to install the ac3 filter and cyberlinks power dvd decoders. Ive set it up recently...works great :) You need a wired setup of course...

Just in case you dont have them, heres the links if you want to check that feature out :)
