Without increasing overall volume? I have my main pc doubling as media center pc so I have other things (like IM messages) that I wouldn't want to hear at max volume just because I can't hear the video that well

vista allows you to control the volume of applications independantly.
simply start the application you wish to control, and then right click on the volume icon in the systray. select the "Open Volume Mixer" from the menu
you should be able to see the individual applications open and raise or lower the volume for them as necessary.

you can also use a filter like MatrixMixer or Ac3Filter to always boost the volume during playback.
