Why my HTPC makes me want to scream!

What I hate most about my Vista HTPC is that things just stop working for no reason at all.  I have been watching DVD's and DVRMS shows fine for almost a month, now this morning I cant playback anything, I just get an error saying the video is not supported and I might be missing the codec.  I have made no changes for weeks on my system, it's like it just decided to screw me over.  I have no idea where to even start.

Any recently installed Windows Updates? Uninstall or do a system restore.

I had made no changes in almost a month, and now of course it started working again after the 3rd reboot.

My HTPC is acting more and more like my wife the longer I use it.  Things will be running smooth just the way I like it with no problems then all of a sudden the whole system crashes and refuses to work. In the end I have no idea what caused the meltdown and I’m not really sure how I fixed it but I’m pretty damn positive it’s going to happen again.
