Can someone please help me?

 

I have a Yamaha V2700 amp which includes HDMI switching, which I use with my Vista Media Center PC over HDMI for video.

I have had a problem with the receiver handshaking with the PC ever since I built the PC. Its now starting to bug the family big time and I think I may need to change the graphics card to resolve this.

My problem is the a receiver needs to be on before the PC boots otherwise the handshake won’t happen. Rather than turning the amp on after the PC has booted which is what we need to do in some cases. This causes a problem if the PC starts up in the night (whilst the amp is off) to record something and is then still on in the morning. We then switch the amp and TV on in the morning and get sound and no picture and then need to cycle the power on the PC to effect a reboot. Not good I know!

The graphics card in the PC is an “512MB nVIDIA GEFORCE 8500GT SUPER PCI-E SLi VIDEO CARD”
I have connected it to the amp with a DVI to HDMI lead (HDMI on the amp end).

Can someone advise if I need to change the graphics card to get automatic handshaking to work. If so what graphics card with 1080P over HDMI can be recommended to work?

This is purely a media PC no gaming required. Another fan less card would be great if possible.

PS the Samsung F71 HDMI TV seems to handshake ok with the amp if I unplug the PC from the amp (It then shows the default Yamaha screen)

Have you checked with Yamaha for a firmware update?  A friend's Denon AVR-2308 has this issue but was fixed with a firmware update on the receiver.  From what you say it does seem like a driver issue but the firmware is worth checking as well.

Yes I did, but Yamaha technical was far from helpful.  They said it was a PC issue.

 

If I remember rightly, I took the amp out of the circuit (a while back) to test the handshake direct with the TV but the issue was still there. Hence I also think it’s a PC issue that’s why I was asking about the graphics card?

I am also having the same issue.  I have a GeForce 8500GT with native HDMI and it is hooked up to my Onkyo TX-SR606 via HDMI.  My receiver needs to be powered up and on the correct input before the PC boots up or I will just get a black screen.  Even if it is working fine, but I shut off the receiver and come back a little while later, it happens again and the only way to fix it is the reboot the PC.  I can tell the issue is definitely with the HDMI because I used to have it hooked up with Component video and I never had the issue.

I was having the same problem, here is a utility that resolves this by disabling the display and re-enabling it.

After fighting I gave up and switched to component. I no longer have this problem, my CableCARD tuners change channel faster and I eliminate a judder issue I was having on some channels.

I'll try to go HDMI again in the future, but for now I just want something that works. It should also be noted that on my system there is no perceivable quality issue between hdmi and component.

I got the same issue with my 8500GT + Onkyo TX-SR674.  It's most annoying.   However, to semi-resolve I set my BIOS to re-post video from stand-by.  That way if I run into the issue, i simply hit the power button on the PC throwing into stand-by, then hit power again once my receiver is powered up.  Takes less time than a full reboot.

I usually only run into this issue when the tunes are cranked and the receiver's protection circuit kicks in.  Damn you Onkyo for saving me $600!!   *shakes fist*  Now I can't run out and buy a newer, BETTER recever!!!   LOL.  :D

Ben, how do you run the .exe from the on the PC?  I can VNC into it and run the exe but that seems redundant.  Is there a way to automate/schedule it through media center?

I can't try drummerguy's suggestion from the previous post since my Media Center is in the 'high availability' power mode since I use an extender.  Plus you can't put the PC to sleep when its recording, so you have to wait until the show is over to reboot it.

I am also running Vista Ultimate SP1 with the TV Pack and an HDHomeRun QAM digital cable tuner.  I haven't notice any speed difference in changing channels or judder on component or HDMI, but it guess that sounds like an HDCP/drm thing from using CableCARD. 

The main reason I don't want to switch back to component is just the lack of a mess of cables that HDMI brings.  Also I would have to an addition macro into my harmony to change the TVs input since from what I've read, the unit doesn't have the best video conversion capibilities

There are a few ways to activate it, from keyboard shortcuts etc. Personally I don't use it, just ran across it before I switched to component.

For me I wasn't using the audio from HDMI anyways, so it's the same number of cables -- if you count component as one and hdmi as one.

Well I have had the same issue for a long time.Changed the Amp twice,Tv twice and had over 15 different cards both ATI and Nvidia.Then I stumbled on the MSI 9400GT HDMI (passive or fan) and it works everytime.The problem with most GFX cards is when they lose the EDID they shut down the HDMI port making a reboot the only option. The MSI 9400 keeps tricking the HDMI port to think it is still attatched to TV that is on.Now I don't know if it is just the MSI 9400 that does this or other makes but I have fitted this card to several machines and all with perfect handshakes.

I'm also having this same problem. I've just put a new HTPC together using an ASUS P5E-VM HDMI which has an onboard Intel G35 based HDMI graphics card. I haven't found a work around, although a suspend/resume will do the trick rather than requiring a full reboot.

I've been looking at the problem for a while and have been talking to my colleagues about it at work who have echoed an earlier comment which is that if the PC doesn't detect a connected HDMI device on power on it simply shuts down the HDMI output port and a suspend/resume or reboot is the only option to bring it back.

I'm just about to try a different telly to try and prove this however it doesn't sound like it will.
