HELP! I applied the "remote desktop" fix and things are bad

    Hello,

I was a happy user of the multi-session remote desktop hack prior to installing SP1.  I just installed SP1 to get my new Linksys extender working, but I lost my remote desktop functionality, so I went to re-apply the patch...

Well, first I applied the old patch (bad idea) and remote desktop didn't work, and my extender stopped working!   Then I found the SP1 patch, but I had a devil of a time installing that because my terminal services service wouldn't stop (and therefore wouldn't let the file copy happen in the batch file script).   So, I disabled the service, rebooted, and applied the SP1 patch script.  The SP1 patch copied all the files accordingly, but it, of course, wasn't able to start the terminal services service.  So I reset the service back to 'automatic' and rebooted.

And, with that, I am still without remote desktop services, and even worse, my linksys extender is still not working!

What can I do?  Can someone please help?

    Thanks,
    Jon

Try to replace the Sp1 hacked DLL in Safe Mode....Make sure you take ownership of the file.

I had to do that before....

If I am able to replace the dll successfully without being in safe mode (with no errors), do you think I still need to do it again in safe mode?

And with regards to taking ownership, I log in as user "mc" with full admin rights.  Is it OK to 'take ownership' as the person I login in as "mc" as long as I am all the administrators groups?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I replaced the hacked DLL again (not in safe mode, didn't seem to need to -- I just renamed the original DLL and then copied the hacked DLL to the system32 dir and renamed it to termsrv.dll and there were no complaints).   I then went in and took ownership as "administrators" group.

I noticed that there is a terminal server user, so I gave that user full perms to termsrv.dll as well.

The result?  The remote desktop connection app at least now "thinks" for about 20 seconds for it gives up, and I hear the HTPC hard drive cranking away like it's trying to respond.  But, in the end, it does fail.

Similarly, and more of a concern, is that my extender also "waits to connect" for at least 30 seconds if not more until it still finally gives up.

Is there an error log I can access that would help gurus here figure out where the problem is?  I just got my extender and it's very frustrating that after having it working perfectly for 2 days, I'm without it now thanks to my hackery. :(

    Any additional info appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jon

Re: HELP! I applied the "remote desktop" fix and things are bad

Can someone do me a big favor and PM me [or email me:  jrdeutsch (at) yahoo.com] the original termsrv.dll and rdpclip.exe files from the Vista SP1 installation?

Because of the order of the things I did, I have lost the original files, so I am unable to revert back to where I started prior to applying the patch.  It seems like the only thing I can do at this point is to revert back to the original SP1 files so I can get my extender working again.

In addition, are the reg file updates something I need to roll back as well manually?  Is there an "undo" script available?  That reg import looks huge... looks like a lot to manually undo.

But at this point, I would do anything to avoid a re-install of my Vista system that has been otherwise running reliably for 20 months straight.

    Can anyone lend a hand?

    Thanks,
    Jon

I am going to do some more experimenting today, but I believe that this Windows update has totally screwed up the Remote Desktop hack:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941833

I'll post more after I get more time to confirm.  If someone else knows something, please share!

    Thanks,

Re: HELP! I applied the "remote desktop" fix and things are bad

OK, so I just realized that it was the version of my CLIENT SOFTWARE that was not allowing me to do RDC with the post-SP1 hack.   So, I can not do remote desktop with my SP1 Vista HTPC.

But... my extender still is not working!  What could be the problem with the extender and the hack??

Re: HELP! I applied the "remote desktop" fix and things are bad

Here is the error I'm getting in the event viewer when trying to connect my extender to my WMC box:

"The RDP protocol component "DATA ENCRYPTION" dectected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client."

    Any insights?
    Thanks,
    Jon

Re: HELP! I applied the "remote desktop" fix and things are bad

I don't have an extender so I don't know how helpful this will be but FWIW, when setting up a remote desktop connection, if you expand the "Options" button and go to advanced, there is a Server Authentication section where you want to set it to "Connect and don't warn me".  If there is something similar for the extender, that might do the trick.

Unfortunately, I see no such settings for extenders.  Note, in the event log, it's a TermDD Event ID 50 type of error.
