PMC-120 Sync Issue With Vista WMP11

I have owned a PMC-120 for a little over two years. For that entire period my computer was an MCE-2005. I use the PMC-120 to watch TV shows during my commute to and from work on the trains. It's fantastic. Seriously, for years before this it was crossword puzzles and suduko.

Before this I synced using WMP10 and then transitioned to WMP11 on the MCE machine with no problem.

I just replaced the MCE 2005 machine with a new Vista Home Premium machine. It comes with a built-in version of WMP11 that is basically the same as the WMP11 for XP. I tried to sync yesterday and found that TV shows were not being converted. I got the C00D1189 error.

Has anybody dealt with this issue. My research suggests that the Zune 2.0 can work for watching my DVR-ms files on the train, but I seriously would rather not spend any more $s.

    Thanks in advance!

Re: PMC-120 Sync Issue With Vista WMP11

I've noticed a few page views but no responses. Here's an update on the problem.

    1) I can sync regular files - WMV video files, MP3, jpgs.
    2) I can see all the DVR-MS files as TV files within WMP11. I can play TV files within WMP11
    3) When I go to sync, the process starts, when the WMP11 gets to a DVR-MS it shows itself as converting the file - but its stays at 0%. After a few moments WMP determines that the sync failed and move on the next file.
    4) Neil Smith --- Windows Media Newsgroups --- suggested that the cache for the media player may have become corrupted and had me delete it through more options on the sync tab. No luck.
    5) A buddy of mine thought it could have to do with the fact that I record to a USB 2.0 Hard Drive and suggest that I try to sync a file from the local C: Drive. So I recorded a show to the C: drive and attempted to sync it to the PMC-120. No luck.

Does anybody else have any suggestions? Microsoft's web pages suggest that I should contact Dell for problems with WMP 11 - but that really seems like a lost cause. I've sent iriver (The PMC-120 Manufacturer) several messages with no reply. I'm not sure what other directions to take this.  If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

    Thanks!

Is this with HD or SD shows?

Re: PMC-120 Sync Issue With Vista WMP11

Well, I was going to suggest trying a different MPEG-2 decoder, also known as a DVD Decoder, since the Microsoft one included with Vista has known problems working with the AC-3 audio in HD broadcasts. I would still suggest trying the NVidia PureVideo DVD Decoder. There is a free 30-day trial here:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html

Also, once you've installed the decoder you will need to make sure it is set as the default MPEG-2 decoder using this tool:

    http://mediacenterexpert.blogspot.com/2006/07/vista-media-center-decoder-utility.html

Two limitations are that this won't work with Vista x64 and I wouldn't suggest trying it if you use CableCARD since it may mess with the DRM restrictions necessary for CableCARD recordings to even play correctly.

Oh yeah, and remember to right click and "Run as administrator" when using the Vista Media Center Decoder Utility.

Excellent.  I'll try this tonight and report on the results.

    A couple notes side notes:
    Vista x32
    No cable card

Re: PMC-120 Sync Issue With Vista WMP11

OK, fixed one problem, but created another.

First the good news.  The new video decoder successfully converted a DVR-MS file to the PMC-120 in WMP 11.  The sound and video were fine.  This solutions looks like it will work.

Now the bad news.  The DVR-MS files now play in WMP11 with no video.  They play.  But you get a black screen with audio.

I'm wondering if there is another video decoder that might work.  I'm going to do some web research and see if I come up with something.  I like free over "trial period", but I have no idea what is out there.

Thanks alot for the suggestion.  This can definitely work for the time and more importantly you've given a track to go down for a possibly better solution.  Great advice!
