    HP z5XX power supply availability

I've seen some posts about people replacing the power supply in the HP z5XX series.  Does anyone know where to get a replacement?

The power supply in my z545 seems to have died.  This is a HIPRO HP-U2557C3, with HP part number 5187-8274.  Unfortunately, HP is saying that this part is not available, and not orderable.  Google searches haven't been particularly fruitful.

    Does anyone know:
    1) Where this power supply might be orderable?
    2) If not, a suitable replacement model?
    3) Either way, the pinout for the 7-pin P6 connector?  (Wires are purple-black-red-black-yellow-black-gray.)

    Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem.  Finding these seems to be very tricky.  I found a few on the net, but selling for almost $300!  Please let me know if you find anything out.

    Thanks!

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

I have spent a better part of a month dealing with this issue for a client (z540). In August I ordered one from HP for $40 and after a couple of weeks an more than a couple of emails to HP and the order just sat there. I called and was told that HP doesn't carry the part anymore. HP tech support (outsourced and offshore) was useless. I asked how they planned to support this entire model range as they all used the same PS. They couldn't even understand the question let alone offer a solution. I bit the bullet and ordered a refurbed one from Tigerdirect parts for twice the new $40. The sent me the wrong part (not even close) and wanted to double that price to $175 to send the correct piece. Talk about bait and switch. Explained the situation to the client and gave them the ugly, cheaper but not total solution of putting a generic 300w PS on its side and leaving the case cover off. Unfortunateley, you also lose the power to the daughter card that supplies power  to the front display and the remote. Here is a poorly designed and enginneered product with just awful support.

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Wow.  So painful.  Had the same experience with HP support.  Also just got the "how was our support email".  My feedback was clear.

Can you tell me a little more about your solution of the generic 300w PS on its side?  Which product did you buy?  Are the connectors the same or did you need more adapters there.  I have my unit behind a cabinet and use a USB remote so losing the display and built in remote are acceptable to me.  Acceptable that is, given HP's total incompetence of the issue. :)

    Thanks -
    Joe

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

I just placed the generic PS on its side and left the cover off. Now the system stays somewhat cool. The connectors are the same minus the one that plugs into the front right daughter card for the front display and remote. Since you are using a USB plug for a separate KB and mouse then that shouldn't be an issue.

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Does anyone know the pinout for that 7-pin header (labelled P6) that connects to the front daughter board?  With that information, it seems like it would be possible to splice an unused Molex connector from the new generic power supply to that board.

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Quick update for all.  I eventually found the power supply here: http://www.impactcomputers.com/5187-8274.html for $90.  The company took two weeks with lousy customer service to get me the part, but it did arrive and does work!  Exact OEM match.

    Good luck!

Is the PS new or refurbished?

Contrary to the website Raul, in a personal correspondence, confirmed that the unit is new but it costs $189.95. Back to square one!

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

I know that many of you have been looking for a replacement power supply for the Z5XX series Media Centers.  It seems that supply and demand have caught up with us on this one.

I too had a failed power supply and was faced with a hard decision.  Do I throw away a platform/form factor that I love simply because the power supplies are hard to come by or expensive or do I upgrade to a new platform.

I decided to replace the power supply and save up some cash for a new platform in a year or two.

I figure for $200.00 I get at least another year or two out of my current system that works great which should give me more than enough time to select a new platform.

For those that can stomach the price here is the link, the seller confirmed that he had 40+ in stock as of 11/01/08.

I have received my NEW power supply and it is an exact match for the dead power supply.

Hope this helps some of you out...

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Nice save guys, thanks.  This must be the life expectancy for these power supplies.  Mine just went *** up tonight.  My fault really... the thing has been running for 3 years pretty much non-stop.  I shut it down to move it and should have let it cool down before bumping it around.  Now it's cold and dark.

All I can say is that for $200, it better be the PS.  lol

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Hooked her up to a standard PS and everything seems fine.  Without the daughter board powered the front panel (as mentioned) is dead, but the IR receiver is dead too.  Didn't expect that.  Luckily I had the one that came with my WinTV PVR USB2 which will do the job until the new PS comes in.  I'm hoping this PS outlives my desire to run the box.  If not I'll just have to dig into the broken PS to figure out the daughter board wiring.  Should be able to trace those wires to where they joint up with other voltages/grounds from the other harnesses.

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Well the graphics card in my z555 went up in flames yesterday and managed to take out the power supply as well. I've got it hooked up to a PS from another computer and it's working fine, except of course everything that runs off the daughter board in front, so I ordered a new PS. I found a store on eBay (link below) that has several available for $89.95 + $15 shipping. It's being shipped ground, so it'll probably be a week before it gets to me, but I'll post again when I've got it if it works out okay. I hope it does, as it's half the price of the jpcparts one.

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Nice deal.  Hope it works out for you.  Mine came in today and I'm hooking it up tonight.  I'm crossing my fingers that it fixes some other things.  Long shot, but my keyboard IR receiver crapped out a month or two before the PS died.  It would be nice if that came back so I wouldn't have to buy another wireless kbd/mouse setup.  I'm tearing the old PS apart in hopes of finding the power needs for the daughter board just in case the PS dies in the future.  So far it's pretty ugly in there.  (And dusty)

Re: HP z5XX power supply availability

Sweet!  New PS brought back the kbd/mouse IR receiver.  That must have been the beginning of the end for the PS.   That mitigates the cost of the PS since I was going to have to buy a wireless kbd setup.  Had my eye on an $80 rig that I don't need anymore.
